EU/US research and education workshop, Atlanta, USA
An EU/US research and education workshop will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, on 17 and 18 November.
Devoted to the internationalisation of research and graduate studies, the workshop will provide a forum for research leaders and policy makers at universities and research institutes, as well as scientists with experience of research abroad, to discuss issues related to researcher mobility and transatlantic collaboration.
Key questions to be addressed include:
- How can the development of transatlantic degrees be stimulated to attract more talented young people into science careers?
- What innovative curricula are needed to prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers to engage in global research and development (R&D) careers?
- What scientist mobility schemes can best contribute to the building of lasting transatlantic networks of excellence?
- How can the transatlantic mobility of scientists best contribute to innovation in a global context?
The workshop will take place under the auspices of the French Presidency of the European Union, and is co-organised by the Delegation of the European Commission, the French Embassy to the United States, the Georgia Institute of Technology and the National Science Foundation.
SUE-MoT, Second International Conference on Whole Life Urban Sustainability and its Assessment

Web page http://sue-mot.org/conference/
22–24 April 2009, Loughborough, UK
Sustainability is arguably the challenge of our time. There is growing recognition that our current development path is now threatening the natural systems upon which our civilisation ultimately depends. Sustainable urban development requires a new way of doing things – a way which reduces environmental impact while at the same time promoting widespread economic and social progress. The buildings and supporting infrastructure of our towns and cities contribute positively to people’s quality of life but often use materials, produce waste and release CO2 significantly in excess of that which our land, water and climate can continue to accommodate. Many urban centres are still blighted by crime and poverty: poorly designed developments have negative effects on the health, welfare and economic prospects of communities.
Throughout the world urban decision-makers need robust and comprehensive metrics, models and tools to help them assess the extent to which their choices are leading to urban developments that address these issues and contribute positively to sustainable development – a fact recognised at the WCED, Rio and Rio +10 United Nations summits.
Conference aim
Following the outstanding success of our International Conference on Whole Life Urban Sustainability and its Assessment in Glasgow in 2007, we felt inspired to organise a follow-up conference.
This conference will bring together leading international researchers, professionals, tool developers, policy makers and other stakeholders who are involved in the field of urban sustainability assessment to exchange ideas and knowledge on how to meet the assessment needs of urban decision-makers.
Themes
The conference themes are:

INNOVATION SUSTAINABLE

Funding call for LIFE environment projects open Deadline: 21 November 2008

SMEs
and a range of other European organisations can now apply for funding
from the EU to support a wide variety of “green” projects.
In July, the European Commission published a call for proposals under
its LIFE+ programme, a financial instrument which aims to protect and
nurture the natural environment.

The LIFE+ programme supports the development and implementation of EU
policy on the environment and covers three specific areas: nature and
biodiversity; environmental policy and governance; and information and
communications.

The Commission has built a four-month consultation period into the
call timetable to help applicants submit good quality proposals. Advice
on the call will be provided through a series of workshops, to take
place in every Member State between July and November 2008.

Applicants must send their proposals to Member State authorities by 21 November 2008.

More than €207 million has been made available for the 2008 call,
which covers a range of issues. Under nature and biodiversity, grants
will fund projects that aim to protect, conserve and restore natural
systems, habitats and flora and fauna.

Policy and governance themes include climate change, water
management, air quality, soil preservation and initiatives that aim to
improve the environmental performance of urban areas. The call also
covers activities that seek to disseminate information and raise
awareness on environmental issues, including forest fire prevention.

Innovation for Sustainability

Start: 2008-09-08 00:00

Innovation for Sustainability a new paradigm for business leadership
2 day course 8th-9th September 2008
The University College for the Creative Arts
Farnham Surrey UK

Organised by: The Centre for Sustainable Design

Background
The growing global concern over climate change, resource productivity and more broadly sustainable development calls for new rules for innovation. A sustainable, low carbon economy will require a paradigm shift in thinking and doing. Time is short and the clock is ticking. A global sustainability strategy often focuses on risks and compliance, however the imperative for change requires new approaches to strategic business development and product innovation. Customers – whether they are consumers, retailers, businesses or government – are demanding sustainable solutions. Organisations must Adapt or Die. Innovation for Sustainability will inform and inspire, helping delegates to understand global trends, threats, and opportunities. Delegates will create their own personal and corporate route map for sustainable innovation and effective strategies for implementation.

Aims
To raise levels of understanding among the delegates of a new vision for innovation within a Corporate Sustainability Strategy. To highlight emerging risks, threats and opportunities associated with global environmental and social trends. To present successful cases and deliver practical tools for development and implementation of sustainable innovation strategies.

Who should attend
Innovation for Sustainability is a two day training course that has been designed for business executives, marketing managers, innovation managers and sustainability/CSR/environmental managers that are exploring strategies to develop and implement sustainable innovation.

Programme overview

INNOVATION SUSTAINABLE
