The University of Iceland was established 17th June 1911, on the centenary of the national hero of Iceland, 19th
century Icelandic statesman Jón Sigurðsson, usually referred to as
"president". The University of Iceland offers nearly four hundred
undergraduate and graduate degree programmes. The university is
organised into five academic schools, and 25 faculties. The university
offers diverse programmes on all levels and the University of Iceland
is the only university in the country offering undergraduate and
graduate studies in all the main disciplines. In addition, the
University of Iceland is an internationally renowned research
university and University of Iceland academics have received a great
deal of international recognition for their scientific work. A large
number of research findings by scientists from the University of
Iceland is considered ground-breaking in its field. The university
operates around 40 research institutes, and research-based graduate
studies are also offered.
Day 2: Wednesday, 26 November 14.00–15.30 - OLDES.eu - An affordable/personal health care system for ageing ICT2008 in Lyon
Submitted by consen on Wed, 2008-11-12 15:25.An affordable and personalised health care system for an independent ageing
There is a social and market demand for the new, ICT based responses to care and health service provision to improve chronic disease management at home and prolong the possibility of autonomous, safe and socially fulfilling life. Many current ICT e-health applications focus on the provision of individual clinical services. There is a need for improvement of horizontal applications and for the coordination of services from different agencies and disciplines into tailored and customised packages of provision spanning both health and social care. The proposed session will exchange best practice and propose new solutions for the coordinated of the delivery and governance of complex ehealth services. It will explore the architectural and technological issues of these applications and infrastructures and investigate viable business models for innovative and low cost health services’ provision. A comparative approach with the enterprise interoperability world will be considered.Web site: http://www.oldes.eu

CINEFOGO Network Conference on Social Rights, Active Citizenship and Governance in EU on 16-18Mar09 in BXL
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 2008-10-21 08:13.The conference will focus on two important topics relevant for all citizens of Europe as well as all European policy makers:
- Social rights and social reality in the European Union
- Active citizenship and governance.
The conference will present CINEFOGO Network findings on the relationships among citizens, NGOs, civil servants and politicians at the European and national levels. It will identify different roles of various actors and institutions, the ways they are (or are not) involved in the decision making processes, and how their actions influence the changing human living conditions – including accessibility of social rights to European citizens.
Governance at the EU level has a big impact the on daily life and working conditions of the Europeans. However, the citizens of Europe mostly do not understand the complexities of EU policy making. Their active participation at various levels of governance differs from one country to another and from agenda to agenda, depending on uneven strengths of particular civil societies, different civic cultures, and emerging new modes of cooperation between private and public actors. There is an important role of intermediate organizations, such as NGOs and the media in nurturing conditions for the activation of European citizens. In general, active citizens’ participation is still a feeble resource in the EU decision making processes.

Next Generation Public Safety Communication Networks and Technologies (NGenSafe'09)
Submitted by consen on Mon, 2008-10-20 20:17.In conjunction with the IEEE International Conference on
Communications (IEEE ICC 2009), Dresden, Germany,
18 June 2009
Public Safety Communication (PSC) is currently receiving increasing attention of research community world wide. The performance and resilience of PSC systems directly impacts the level of coordination and efficiency of public safety agencies. The efficient communication is probably among the most important parts of emergency response and could affect the number of human lives saved in many parts of the world.
The PSC Europe Forum is promoting research interest and needs of public safety commmuniction.
Workshop Motivation
- PCS communication today is mainly based on several different analog (VHF) and first generation digital radio access technologies (TETRA, TERAPOL, P25). The technological diversity creates an interoperability problem at different levels that reduces the efficiency of emergency operations; it increases the market fragmentation and equipment costs. It is important in the early research stages to consider the development of interoperable and harmonized technologies.
- There are cases when pubic safety agencies are using existing public communication networks and there is an obvious need of research towards the use and optimization of existing technologies that will take into account private public safety user requirements.
SEC-2 Demonstration Project Phase 1
Submitted by consen on Sat, 2008-10-18 11:00.COOPERATION
THEME 10
SECURITY
Call SEC-2009-1
SEC-2 Demonstration Project Phase 1
Coordination and support actions 100% funded of 1.5 years of duration
Activity 10.1: Increasing the Security of citizens.
Topic SEC-2009.1.1.2 CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear
agents and Explosives (phase 1)
The Security theme aims at meeting its main objectives – improved security for the citizens,
and enhanced competitiveness for industry - as substantiated in the topics of its
‘demonstration projects‘ which will be the ’flagships‘ of the Security theme.
Successful demonstration of the appropriateness and performance of novel solutions is a key
factor for the take-up of the output of the research work and its implementation by security
policies and measures.
CBRNE CBRNE
Barcelona October 2008
Technology oriented research in the Security theme consists of several
building blocks, representing three – in some cases parallel, in others
subsequent - routes that contribute to the overall objectives:
- On the top level of the building block structure, demonstration projects
will carry out research aiming at large scale integration, validation
and demonstration of new security systems of systems going
significantly beyond the state of art.
They depend upon the compatible, complementary and interoperable
development of requisite system and technology building blocks of the
integration projects and capability projects.
They intend to promote the application of an innovative security solution,
which implies a strong involvement of end users, taking into account the
relevant legal and society related issues, and strong links to new
standardisation.
The Security theme aims at meeting its main objectives –
