Forum Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) 2008 – Space in the service of the environment and security      2008-09-16 - 2008-09-17      Lille - Palais des congrès

The European Union and its member states have been working for 10 years on a major public initiative to provide information on the environment and safety : for better husbandry of the planet’s resources, improved understanding and knowledge to help in decision-making, advance warning of any threat to the safety of the population and ways of reacting more effectively.

As a part of its forthcoming Presidency of the European Union, France and the European Commission are jointly organising a Forum to mark the launch of the first GMES services in pre-operational mode.

These services include fields such as territorial management, the marine environment, air quality and emergency situations, whether created by natural disasters or human activity.

The GMES Forum 2008 is intended to present GMES and its earliest services both to end-users and to the intermediary companies providing services based on this type of information and wishing to use the results of this public investment to develop new markets.

We thank you in advance for your interest in this event. If you wish to participate in the Forum we would like to encourage you to register on line if you have received a written invitation, or to contact the organisers.

ESA training course for undergraduate students

The European Space Agency (ESA) is offering a training course for undergraduate students from ESA Member States and Collaborating States from 25 to 29 August at the European Space Technology and Research Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, the Netherlands.

The workshop, entitled 'System engineering and technology for space missions' is intended to provide participating students with a general overview and better understanding of ESA activities in the area of end-to-end mission development.

Special emphasis will be placed on mission design, system engineering and technology, in order to enhance the formal technical education of the participants and facilitate their understanding of how the space sector operates.

Any interested university students aged 18 to 28 may apply, but the workshop is primarily targeted at students who have completed one to three years of their first degree. It will be particularly suitable for those who are interested in joining ESA hands-on projects in future (such as ESEO, ESMO, GENSO, etc.) or who are considering pursuing a career in the space industry.

Introduction

With the adoption of the INSPIRE directive, 2007/2/EC, the focus of this year's conference is on reviewing the progress of the INSPIRE Legislation and on the development of SDIs in general. The objectives of this year's conference are to:

ESTP - the platform for space technologies

ESTP - the platform for space technologies

The European Space Technology Platform (ESTP) aims to create a non-dependent technology portfolio facilitating European strategic independence for the access to and exploration in space, and to support the development of next-generation technologies best serving Europe’s ambitions in space-related sectors (Galileo, GMES, security, space exploration, broadband communications, etc.).

The ESTP has been set up building and expanding on the success of a pre-existing co-ordination and harmonisation effort (Technology Harmonisation/ESTMP) sustained by ESA and its Member States, national agencies, space industry and research organisations. The ESTP complements this effort in several strategic areas, along three main pillars on (1) non-dependence, (2) technology spin-in and multiple use, and (3) enabling technologies for EU Applications.

The ESTP's Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) conveys the results of the most extensive space technology coordination process in Europe, involving virtually all the space technology stakeholders since 2000.
