Objective
• To understand and create a class of information technologies that would enable a scientifically
demonstrable enhancement of the quality of life for the aged in the home of the future.
• Context-Aware Computing: The research will identify multimodal technology that robustly locates a person,
and tracks activity in the short and long term, with state of the art facilities for broadband access and
computing. Tracking technologies include arrays of smart cameras and microphones and other sensors,
all leading to an environment that is aware of its occupants (elderly) and their activities.

Aim
How do we increase the opportunities for Aging in Place?
• Recognizing and advertising crisis
• Assisting daily routines
• Supporting peace of mind for adult children

Research Problem
• To develop intelligent machines, interfaces, and environments that can perceive, recognize, anticipate
and interact with humans.
• Sensors such as eyes (cameras), ears (microphones) and touch (contact sensors) are used. Analysis and
interpretation of the signals from these sensors gives the system certain context awareness.
• To this end, we will be developing signal understanding and pattern recognition techniques for
analysing sensory signals from scenes and environments.
• We will be exploring methods for perceiving where people are, recognizing them, understanding their
actions, and interpreting the communication stream.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate is soliciting applications for international research projects aligned with the mission and requirements of DHS S&T. These projects should be designed to augment and complement, through international research and collaboration, the depth and breadth of homeland security science and technology research. Specifically, the S&T Directorate seeks proposals that will contribute to homeland security science and technology, including but not limited to:
* Evaluation of novel tools or approaches to confronting homeland security challenges;
* Basic research to provide data, understandings, or models that support S&T efforts or policy decisions; and
* S&T and operations research evaluations to support revolutionary improvements in DHS's mission and its component agencies' operations.

A french SME specialising in medical data mining and information networks, ITI, wishes to create the first European social-health *network*. ITI is seeking potential partners to that end.
    * multimedia (ie. by Web, phone, mobile, TV, etc.)
    * multilingual,
    * carrying a 'quality seal'
    * providing advices, guidelines  and recommendations to persons in
      loss of autonomy (age, handicap, disease) and, specifically, to
      their helping environment (family, friends, social workers,
      medical professionals and paramedics, ie "the carers").

The submitted advices, guidelines and recommendations... will be:
    * found in existing sources from our partners + the Web with
      specific algorithms
    * preanalysed/approved/qualified by way of tools and technologies
      (such as TextMining)
    * confirmed by their practical field use (proven track record)and
      easy-to-upload return of experience.

Our expertise in scientific R&D will allow us to arrange a re-distribution of information and experience (model = consumer to consumer or CtoC) thus assessed with the same criteria as those of biomedical studies.

Our models would be like:
    * Google for the intelligent management of information (a lot of
      information, particularly "institutional" information, is already
      available)to create a single window service
    * UTUBE for the social network
    * Medline and Evidence-based medicine for the qualification /
      validation automated by information

However the system, which was meant to allow them to share medical information across a network, highlighted the limits of computer ‘understanding’. Unlike humans, computers can’t yet make the connecting leaps among various bits of information.

The EU-funded Doc@Hand project set out to improve coordination among health professional by improving access to information. The researchers aimed to ‘push’ information to health professionals making decisions about patients’ healthcare, rather than expecting those professionals to ‘pull’ out all the relevant data.

The data could be delivered to the health professional’s computer or to a mobile device. Easy access to information should lead to speedier and better decision-making.

For example colon cancer patients suffering from anaemia can experience shortness of breath. The medical term for this shortness of breath is ‘dyspnoea’. If you asked the patients to discuss dyspnoea they wouldn’t know what you were talking about.  If you asked them about their ‘shortness of breath’ they might have plenty to say on the subject.

Business Models for eHealth

The study will analyse successful business models for innovative eHealth applications, focusing on financing, longer term sustainability, incentives of all the stakeholders and on the role of procurers. Particular attention should be given to ICT applications for chronic diseases management, with reference to the research carried out in this field that the European Commission has funded (FP6, FP7).

There is a need to investigate methodologies of assessment and ideal scenarios for business models for innovative eHealth applications, focusing on financing, longer term sustainability, incentives for all the stakeholders and on the role of procurers
